Acquired by Gruppo editoriale Mauri Spagnol (GeMS) in 2009, the publishing house was funded in 1957 when Paolo Boringhieri took over part of the catalogue of Einaudi with a focus on science, mythology and ethnology. Since then, the two souls of the publishing company – scientific studies on one hand (mathematics, logic, physics and natural sciences) and humanities on the other (history, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, the disciplines of the psyche and art history) – have followed intertwined paths.
In a catalogue which has no equivalent in Italian publishing, scholars of mythology such as Mircea Eliade, Kàroly Kerényi and Furio Jesi, of ethnology such as Ernesto de Martino, and above all of the human psyche, such as Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung, whose Complete works have been published by Bollati Boringhieri, are to be found side by side with the great names in scientific knowledge, such as Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Wolfgang Pauli and Enrico Fermi.
With the arrival of Giulio Bollati at the head of the publishing house in 1987, it takes root the idea of an integrated culture, free from the constrictions of disciplinary divisions. New editorial series are thus developed, opening up to contemporary history, narrative, memoirs and literary essays. More recently, some of the catalogue’s gems are the works of Edmund de Waal, Elizabeth von Arnim, Lucia Berlin, Juile Otsuka, Claire Messud, Luigi Zoja, Marc Augé, Giorgio Agamben, Giacomo Marramao, Serge Latouche, Donatella Di Cesare, Jim Al-Khalili, Eric Cline.
